After his time at Notts Ian had spells as a player at Hull
City, Walsall, Dunfermline, Lincoln, Northampton, Instant Dict (Hong

Began his coaching career with the red team academy 'over Trent Bridge' before taking up his current role as Reserve Team Coach. When Gary Megson left 'by mutual consent' in February 2006, he was put in temporary charge with Frank Barlow in a joint first team management role. He and Barlow were named Managers of the Month for March 2006, when they went 10 games unbeaten, with 6 straight wins with the team narrowly missing out on the League One playoffs. Colin Calderwood was named the permanent successor to Megson. Calderwood sacked 'Charlie' at the end of the 2006-7 season after a catastrophic 2-5 home defeat by Yeovil in the League One play-offs after they had won the away leg 2-0. Overconfidence? The 'Forest at Wembley 2007' t-shirts for sale on Ebay after the first leg could be a clue. October 2007 saw Charlie appointed manager of Notts County. |

Football Post readers the action from Meadow Lane where he earned a
living as a player in the 1970s. He is now The Times's man in the press boxes of the Midlands, and the author of an admired biography of Magpies legend Tommy Lawton which he followed up by publishing the diaries he wrote as a teenage recruit at Meadow Lane entitled Steak… Diana Ross. |
